Routine dental appointments are imperative for the maintenance of our children’s health. It’s important that parents instill this habit in their children at an early age. A trip to your dentist may seem like a trivial but can be intimidating for young kids. Getting your child to the dentist can be a daunting task for parents if your child has peers with prior negative experiences. As a parent, you can make the dental visit exciting by using positive words (i.e., use simple phrases like “We get to go to the dentist” in place of, “We have to go to the dentist”).
Parents can also prepare their little ones by explaining them what to expect e.g. something as simple as showing the website of the dental clinic can go a long way in calming your child. This is because children are fearful of the unknown. Don’t lie, if your child needs dental treatment. Honesty is the best policy. It is important to remember to use words that are non-threatening. Most of all portray the dentist as the “good guy” rather than scolding them, by using the dentist as a prop!
